Over the last fifteen years, the industry has come to a greater scientific understanding of the hazards of water immersion and activity and how to reduce them. Dramatic advances have been made in understanding recreational water illness (RWI) outbreaks. Efforts to prevent disease transmission have advanced: The Model Aquatic Health Code has been updated to include many science-based principles, ranging from facility design to operations to reducing disease transmission. In addition, broad collaborations are now in place and facility designs have evolved to reduce the impact of disease on those who are in or around water. This presentation will chart the future for aquatics and educate facilities, health departments, industry suppliers, and the end user on strategies for reducing disease transmission.
